Federal agents searched the Washington, DC home of Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., on Monday morning, executing what the Department of Justice described as a judicially authorised search warrant. The DOJ said it had approved the warrant as part of an ongoing federal investigation, declining to give further details on the reason for the probe.
What officials and the congresswoman say
In a statement to NPR, which first reported the search, the department said agents with Homeland Security Investigations “executed a judicially authorised search warrant”. Current and former federal officials with knowledge of the operation said it is part of a multi-year investigation involving whistleblower complaints; one former official said it concerned immigration fraud allegations, which Omar denies. A neighbour across the street said agents woke her around 4:30 a.m., arriving with “a great big truck”.
Omar denounced the search on social media, writing: “Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. I will not be silenced.” Her spokesperson, Jackie Rogers, called the search a “raid” and an “outrageous abuse of power”, describing it as an unprecedented escalation in the weaponisation of federal law enforcement against political opponents.
A search with midterm timing
The search comes just weeks before next month’s midterm elections, in which Omar is seeking re-election in Minnesota — a contest already shaping up as a referendum on the administration. Vice President Vance has previously alleged that Omar committed immigration fraud, an accusation she has repeatedly denied. The timing will inevitably sharpen questions about the intersection of federal law enforcement and electoral politics, even as the department insists the warrant followed normal judicial process.
It is rare, though not unprecedented, for federal agents to search the home of a sitting member of Congress — and a judge’s signature on the warrant means investigators convinced a court that probable cause existed. Whatever the investigation yields, the episode deepens the running dispute over the independence of federal law enforcement under intense political scrutiny, a theme that has already played out in the courts this year.
