Pennsylvania Polls Open at 7 a.m. and Close at 8 p.m., With the Line Rule

Pennsylvania voters vote from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, must use their assigned polling place, and can stay in line after 8 p.m. if they arrived on time.

Pennsylvania polling stations open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, 3 November, for the 2026 midterm elections, with the same statewide schedule applying in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg and other communities. The uniformity is helpful: unlike states where hours vary by county, Pennsylvania voters face one statewide window, which makes planning simpler and makes the closing time easier to remember. The key task is not the hours, which are fixed, but the location, which is assigned by residential address.

Pennsylvania voters cannot simply visit any polling station in their neighbourhood. Each registered voter has an assigned polling location based on residential address, and the easiest way to check it is through the Pennsylvania government’s official polling place locator, linked through vote.pa.gov, where voters can also check registration information. A voter who goes to the wrong location may be redirected, losing time, and should therefore verify the address before leaving home, especially if the voter has moved since the last election.

Identification and the line rule

Pennsylvania’s Department of State has reminded voters to check registration details and polling locations before heading out, a reminder that matters most for first time voters and for voters who have changed address. Voters should also know the line rule: if a voter is already in line by 8 p.m., that voter has the right to remain in line and vote, even if the clock passes 8 p.m. while the voter waits. Poll workers are trained on that rule, and voters who arrive on time should not leave a queue because the formal closing time has passed.

The Pennsylvania voting hours guide published on Tuesday sets out the 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. window and the locator link together, which is the combination every Pennsylvania voter needs. Other states open earlier, Vermont from 5 a.m. Eastern, and New York, New Jersey, Virginia and Connecticut from 6 a.m., but Pennsylvania voters should ignore other states’ hours and focus on their own.

A short checklist

Confirm the assigned polling place on vote.pa.gov, confirm registration, take any identification Pennsylvania requires, and arrive with time to spare. If the assigned location has changed, the locator, not a neighbour’s memory, is the source. Pennsylvania’s system rewards preparation: right place, right time, and a voter who arrives before 8 p.m. will vote, however long the line.
