The first weekend of October belonged to Verity. The thriller starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, adapted from a bestselling Colleen Hoover novel, opened at number one with about $32 million in North America and $62 million worldwide, the biggest opening for a Hoover adaptation since It Ends With Us in 2024, according to box-office reporting.

The result confirms a commercial pattern Hollywood once doubted: novels with large, organised, predominantly female readerships open movies the way comic-book franchises used to. Hoover’s audience arrived on the first weekend, in groups, having effectively pre-sold the film through years of book-club devotion, and the studio’s marketing spend simply pointed them at a date.

Behind it, the weekend’s holdovers filled out the chart: the latest Resident Evil entry took second with $12.6 million for a $125 million domestic running total, and Heart of the Beast held third with $10.8 million and $38 million so far, now its director’s highest-grossing film since 2024. In fourth, opening wide, sat the weekend’s cautionary tale, covered separately in this section: a $125-million-plus star vehicle that managed $8 million.

Verity’s second weekend will test whether the opening was an event or a habit, word of mouth on its ambiguous ending has been divided, but a $62 million worldwide start against a mid-range budget is already a win in the ledger that counts.

The larger story is the calendar. October, once where studios dumped what they could not sell in summer, now opens literary thrillers to franchise numbers. The audience did not move; Hollywood finally went to where the audience already was, in the book club.

Theatres needed the result as much as the studio did. Exhibitors have spent two years arguing that mid-budget, adult-skewing films can still open if studios market them as events, and Verity’s first-place finish, powered by a book audience that treated release day as a reunion, is now Exhibit A in that argument. Expect more literary thrillers on more October calendars, greenlit by executives who read this weekend’s chart as permission.

US News Zone will continue to follow this story as further results are confirmed.
